Boston City Councilor Julia Mejia appeared to suffer a medical emergency during a City Council meeting at City Hall Wednesday afternoon, forcing the proceedings to pause for roughly 30 minutes.
The council meeting, which began around noon, had been underway for about 70 minutes when it was abruptly recessed. Councilor Enrique Pepén was presenting an order calling for a hearing on the status of HVAC updates in Boston Public Schools when people could be heard telling him to “wait” and “stop.”
“Julia, are you okay?” someone appears to say on the livestream.
Another person said, “Someone call 911. Someone call 911. Please, immediately.”
The council then entered into a recess, and the meeting resumed about 30 minutes later.
Boston EMS confirmed to Boston.com that crews responded to the council chamber Wednesday afternoon and transported a patient to a Boston-area hospital.
“Due to patient privacy laws, I can’t provide any additional identifying information about the patient,” a Boston EMS spokesperson said.
Mejia appeared conscious as emergency medical technicians took her out of the room on a stretcher, The Boston Globe reported.
Mayor Michelle Wu spoke with Mejia Wednesday afternoon and was “relieved to hear that she is doing well,” a city spokesperson said in a statement to Boston.com.
“We wish Councilor Mejia a swift and full recovery and look forward to her quick return,” the spokesperson said.
Mejia’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment or update on the councilor’s condition.
