Jodhpur sexual assault case: Two arrested after sisters die by suicide in Rajasthan

Two men have been arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault and blackmail of two sisters in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district. The incident occurred on Friday in a village under the Khedapa police station area, where the younger sister allegedly consumed sulphas tablets atop a water tank. She was rushed to a hospital but died during treatment. The case has sparked outrage after both women died by suicide months apart, police said.

Jodhpur Rural SP, PD Nitya, said two accused, identified as Mahipal and Gopal, have been arrested, while efforts are underway to trace other suspects linked to the case. The investigation is being conducted by Additional SP Raghunath Garg.

According to police, the younger sister had filed an FIR on April 11, alleging that her elder sister had been repeatedly sexually assaulted and blackmailed by an e-Mitra operator, Mahipal, along with other accused persons. The complaint stated that the harassment pushed the elder sister to consume poison on March 20, following which she died during treatment.

In her complaint, the younger sister also alleged that the accused later began targeting and blackmailing her as well after sexually assaulting her.

Police officials said no allegations were initially raised by the family after the elder sister’s death, and only a routine inquest had been conducted at the time. Following the younger sister’s complaint, both incidents are now being investigated together.

The case has also triggered allegations of police inaction. Despite the FIR being registered in April, the family alleged that no concrete action was taken against the accused for over a month.

Following the younger sister’s death, family members and members of the Marwar Rajput Sabha staged a protest outside the mortuary, demanding immediate arrests and action against police officials for alleged negligence.

Amid mounting criticism, the Jodhpur Rural SP removed Bawdi police outpost in-charge ASI Dharmendra from duty. A letter has also been sent to the Jodhpur Range Inspector General recommending action against Khedapa SHO Lakha Ram and Bhopalgarh Circle Officer Bhura Ram Khileri over alleged lapses in the investigation.

Police said the younger sister’s post-mortem was conducted on Saturday night, after which the body was handed over to the family and cremated on Sunday morning.
