The Jharkhand Crime Investigation Department (CID) has widened its probe into irregularities in competitive examinations with the arrest of the wife and brother of former TSR Data Processing Private Limited (TDPL) marketing manager Abhay Tiwari.
The two are being questioned over their alleged links to the examination fraud case and possible benefits from the recruitment process. Tiwari, one of the key accused in the case, is already in judicial custody.
The latest arrests come as the state faces growing scrutiny over alleged manipulation in recruitment examinations conducted through TDPL and other agencies.
Investigators are examining whether Tiwari’s relatives obtained government jobs through examinations that may have been compromised and whether their selections were connected to the alleged network under investigation.
Tiwari’s role has emerged as a major focus of the CID probe. Investigators have alleged that he worked as a marketing manager and authorised representative of TDPL while also clearing several competitive examinations himself.
The CID has said its investigation found that he had qualified in multiple JSSC and JPSC examinations, apart from several other competitive tests.
His examination record is now being examined alongside his alleged role in the recruitment racket.
The investigation has also brought TDPL under intense scrutiny. The agency was associated with the conduct of the 14th JPSC Civil Services Examination, while questions have been raised over its earlier record and its involvement in other recruitment examinations.
The CID has been examining examination records, digital evidence and the roles of officials and private individuals allegedly connected with the process.
STUDENT PROTESTS AGAINST PAPER LEAKS
The widening investigation comes against the backdrop of a major student movement in Jharkhand.
Aspirants had been protesting since July 25, demanding cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination, action against those responsible for alleged irregularities and an independent CBI probe. The agitation continued for 24 days, with student leaders also holding hunger strikes.
On Monday, the Jharkhand government announced that all examinations conducted through TDPL and the results published by the agency would be cancelled.
It also ordered a CID investigation into examinations conducted through TDPL since 2014.
The decision led student leader Devendra Mahto and other protesters to end their hunger strike. However, sections of the protesting students said their demand for a CBI investigation remained unresolved.
The government’s decision came after weeks of escalating protests, including demonstrations in Ranchi where students burned effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav over the recruitment controversy.
Protesters had accused the government and its allies of failing to address their concerns.
With the arrest of Tiwari’s wife and brother, the CID is now expected to examine the family’s examination records, employment details and possible links with other accused persons.
Investigators are also likely to question them about the alleged network and identify other beneficiaries or intermediaries.
The probe will determine whether their selections were legitimate or connected to the wider examination fraud under investigation.
The latest action therefore adds another layer to a controversy that has grown from allegations surrounding individual examinations into a wider examination and recruitment crisis in Jharkhand.
