Japan Grants 0 Million to Sony to Boost AI Chip Production

Japan has approved major financial support for Sony Group to strengthen domestic semiconductor production, with a focus on AI image sensors.

The subsidy is worth up to 60 billion yen, or around $380 million, and was granted under Japan’s Economic Security Promotion Law through the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

The move is part of a wider national strategy to secure stable supplies of critical semiconductor components and reduce reliance on overseas manufacturing.

Sony Plans New Semiconductor Plant

Sony Semiconductor Solutions plans to invest a total of 180 billion yen, or about $1.13 billion, to build a new semiconductor facility in Koshi, Kumamoto Prefecture. Construction of the plant is already underway.

The facility is expected to produce 10,000 units per month of 300mm wafers, with supply scheduled to begin in May 2029.

Focus on AI Image Sensors

Japan’s government has identified image sensors as a key technology for future industries.

These components are expected to play an important role in autonomous vehicles, automated industrial systems, and AI-powered imaging solutions.

Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa said maintaining a stable supply of such components is important for the development of physical AI technologies.

Sony remains the global leader in image sensors. Its sensor technology is widely used in smartphones, automotive systems, and other advanced electronics.
