James McClean delivered a defiant one-word response after reporting for Derry City training despite claims the club are attempting to terminate his contract.
The former Wrexham star arrived at Derry’s training ground in a black Range Rover on Tuesday morning amid significant uncertainty surrounding his future.
Reports in Ireland claim Derry are seeking to end McClean’s deal because of concerns over his alleged “physical capacity” to fulfil the terms of his contract.
Yet the 37-year-old appeared for training as normal and made his position abundantly clear when approached by reporters.
Asked whether he remained a Derry City player, McClean simply replied: “Clearly.”
The Republic of Ireland centurion returned to his hometown club at the beginning of the season following the conclusion of his spell with Wrexham.
McClean still has two years remaining on his contract but has started only 12 of Derry’s 27 league matches this season.
According to the Irish Independent, the club believe the veteran is not physically capable of meeting the playing and training requirements of his agreement.

McClean is expected to dispute that position and argue his contract cannot simply be terminated unilaterally.
The former Sunderland and West Brom player is also reportedly expected to maintain that any judgement over his fitness should be determined by an independent physician.
The uncertainty comes during a frustrating campaign for Derry, who currently sit sixth in the 10-team League of Ireland Premier Division.
That represents a considerable decline after they finished runners-up in both 2023 and 2025.

Speaking during an RTE punditry appearance in June, he admitted his homecoming had not lived up to expectations.
“Family (are) enjoying being home – probably not so much myself, if I’m being honest,” he said.
“You know, you have a lot of conversations on the phone, and then you come home and you quickly realise that what you hear on the phone is not what you see in reality.
“There’s a lot of factors that’s contributed to that, but we’ll leave them for another day.”
McClean’s career has frequently generated headlines away from football because of his longstanding decision not to wear a poppy around Remembrance Day.

The Derry-born winger has repeatedly explained that his stance relates to the history of the Troubles and, in particular, Bloody Sunday in his home city in 1972.
He has also revealed that he and his family received death threats and other abuse over the decision during his career in England.
McClean won 103 caps for the Republic of Ireland after previously representing Northern Ireland at Under-21 level.
For now, however, attention is firmly on his club future.
