Hiker, 61, walks miles up Mt. Washington with dislocated shoulder before receiving aid at summit

A hiker was rescued after dislocating his shoulder while climbing Mt. Washington Tuesday, officials said.

Around 3:15 p.m., an unrelated hiker called 911 to report an injured man climbing Crawford Patch to the summit, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.

The hiker, who was identified as Kurt Siuzdak, 61, of Connecticut, told authorities he fell and dislocated his shoulder and hurt his back, the department said. He began his hike on Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail at 4:00 a.m. and slipped in an area with wet granite slabs around 10 a.m.

Siuzdak planned to reach the summit and then figure out his options for returning to the trailhead. Authorities told him to continue to the summit, where a team would meet him, officials said.

Around 5:00 p.m., two officers arrived at the summit and hiked one third of a mile down Crawford Patch to Siuzdak. The officers were flanked on each side of Siuzdak as he slowly hiked the rest of the way to the summit, the department said.

After reaching the summit, the officers drove Siuzdak, who officials said was able to “relocate his shoulder”, to the base of the Mt. Washington Auto Road where he was assessed by EMS before he drove himself to urgent care.
