Harry Redknapp backs Frank Lampard for England job after hitting out at Thomas Tuchel contract

Harry Redknapp believes his nephew Frank Lampard would be a “fantastic” choice to lead England in the future.

The former Tottenham boss is backing the 48-year-old to take charge of the Three Lions, suggesting it could become reality sooner rather than later.

“Of course. Absolutely, yeah, he would be fantastic. I can see that happening in a couple of years,” Redknapp said.

With Thomas Tuchel currently at the helm as only the third foreign permanent manager after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello, plenty of supporters would love to see an Englishman back in the dugout.

Redknapp clearly thinks Lampard fits the bill perfectly for that role.

Lampard’s credentials for the job are certainly impressive.

The former Chelsea and England midfielder earned 106 caps for his country, finding the net 29 times along the way.

He also featured at four major international tournaments during his playing days, giving him invaluable experience of the pressures that come with representing England on the biggest stages.

His managerial CV is growing nicely too.

Lampard has already had spells in charge at Chelsea and Everton, and last season he guided Coventry City into the Premier League.

He’s reportedly close to signing a fresh deal with the Midlands club, but Redknapp clearly sees bigger things ahead for his nephew.

Lampard may need to be patient, though, as Tuchel penned a new contract back in February that keeps him in charge through to the 2028 Euros.

Redknapp admitted he was taken aback by the FA’s decision to extend the German’s deal before the World Cup had even kicked off.

“It was a surprise because if he has a shocking tournament, then what are they going to do?” he said.

“But if he has a shocker they are going to look stupid, aren’t they? They have taken a chance. Hopefully it pays off for everybody.”

Despite his reservations about the timing, Redknapp’s priorities are clear.

“I just want to see us win. I’m English and proud to be English. I want to see us win the World Cup.”
