Harry Kane scores England winner in World Cup warm-up clash against New Zealand

England claimed a slender 1-0 triumph against New Zealand in their opening World Cup preparation match, played at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium in sweltering Florida conditions.

Captain Harry Kane proved decisive once again, nodding home his 79th international goal just moments before the half-time whistle.

The striker met a teasing delivery from left-back Djed Spence, flicking his header into the net during first-half stoppage time.

It proved the only breakthrough in a match where England dominated possession but struggled to convert their chances in the oppressive 32-degree heat.

The victory marks a positive start to their American training camp ahead of this month’s tournament.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel adopted an experimental approach to the fixture, deploying completely different starting elevens in each period.

The German manager viewed the encounter primarily as an opportunity to expose his players to the challenging weather conditions they will face during the tournament.

Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha earned his first senior cap during the second half, becoming the fifth youngest player in England’s history to represent the national team.

The 17-year-old winger is among four young players invited to train with the senior squad during their pre-tournament preparations, though he is not included in Tuchel’s final 26-man World Cup selection.

England’s superiority was evident throughout, with the Three Lions registering 14 attempts on goal compared to just two from their opponents during the opening 45 minutes.

However, wasteful finishing prevented a more comfortable scoreline, as Ollie Watkins pulled a promising opportunity wide of the target.

Marcus Rashford and John Stones also failed to capitalise on clear-cut chances before the interval.

The pattern continued after the break against the tournament’s lowest-ranked side, though Ngumoha impressed with an energetic display on his debut.

Jude Bellingham created a couple of threatening moments, yet England could not extend their advantage despite sustained pressure.

Tuchel expressed satisfaction with the outing despite the narrow margin, telling ITV: “We will get with the time that we are out here used to the humidity and the sun. Now the most positive thing is to keep training with the whole group, we have no complaints and no-one is injured.”

The Arsenal contingent has now joined the squad, adding further quality ahead of Wednesday’s final warm-up against Costa Rica in Orlando.

Kane declared himself ready for the challenge, stating: “Physically, mentally, it’s the best shape I’ve been in in my career. The World Cup is the biggest tournament of all and I just can’t wait for it to get started.”

England open their campaign against Croatia in Dallas on 17 June.
