Harivansh elected Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha unopposed

Nominated member Harivansh was elected Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha unopposed, on Friday (April 17, 2026).

President Droupadi Murmu had nominated him to the House following a vacancy created by the retirement of former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. Mr. Harivansh’s second term as a Rajya Sabha member ended on April 9. With his term ending, the Office of the Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, had fallen vacant after the term, and Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan had under Rule 7 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), fixed Friday (April 17, 2026) as the date for holding the election.
