Happy Haitian Flag Day! 223 Years of Freedom, Resilience, and Unity – L’union Suite

May 18, 2026 marks the 223rd anniversary of the Haitian Flag , a powerful symbol of victory, resilience, and unbreakable unity for the Haitian people.

On this day in 1803, at the Congress of Arcahaie, our ancestors, formerly enslaved men and women alongside free people of color set aside division to create something greater. Jean-Jacques Dessalines boldly tore the white stripe from the French flag in an act of defiance, while Catherine Flon carefully stitched the red and blue together. That moment gave birth to the flag under which Haiti would win the only successful slave revolution in history and declare independence as the first Black republic on January 1, 1804.

For Haitians everywhere, the flag is more than a piece of cloth. It carries the blood, tears, sacrifice, and unyielding spirit of our ancestors. It stands as living proof that no chain is unbreakable when a people stand together with purpose and determination.

Today, whether we are on Haitian soil or in the diaspora, the Haitian flag calls us back to our shared identity. It reminds us that despite our differences, we are one people bound by history, faith, and an indomitable will to be free. It challenges us to move beyond division and embrace L’Union fait la Force, Unity Makes Strength.

As we celebrate this sacred day, let us honor the sacrifices of the past by working toward a brighter future, a Haiti rebuilt through courage, solidarity, love, and determination.

Haiti’s best days are still ahead, because this flag, this legacy, and this future belong to every single one of us.

Happy Haitian Flag Day, family!

Have a safe and meaningful celebration.
