Hamm revives Dubai boxing card after turmoil

Canadian boxer Tristan Hamm ended a turbulent week in Dubai with a first-round win and a fight night he had feared might not happen.

Hamm was both promoter and fighter at the latest FightGecko Championship card at Habtoor Theatre. In the opening bout of the night, he stopped Ahmad Ghani in the first round.

That result only told part of the story.

The event had been thrown into doubt by regional unrest, which caused major disruption to travel, planning and ticket sales. According to organisers, the original date was followed by a wave of refunds, leaving the venue close to empty.

Hamm travelled from Canada anyway. He said he wanted to keep the show alive and stand by Dubai at a difficult moment.

“There was a lot of negativity,” Hamm said on Instagram. “I flew in anyway. To stand with this place. To raise the spirit here. To show up when it mattered.”

He described Dubai as safe and praised the response he found on arrival.

The uncertainty around the event had badly affected attendance. Organisers said 98 per cent of ticket holders asked for refunds.

Rather than pull the show, Hamm pushed to rebuild it.

He launched what he called the “Spirit of Dubai” initiative, using social media and direct outreach to bring people back to the event. Tickets were then handed out free to residents, many of whom were attending live boxing for the first time.

That effort turned the card around. Organisers said more than 1,400 people attended, including business figures, influencers and entrepreneurs, and that the venue sold out again before fight night.

They also said Hamm gave away tickets worth $200,000, although that figure was not independently verified.

Inside the ring, the card went ahead with 16 bouts and several stoppages.

Among the featured contests, Warren Spencer defended his FightGecko Championship title against Aleksander Ivanovic. Alan Graves, founder of supplement brand Do Not Age, was also on the card against Vega Villaman. Aaron Chalmers, the former Bellator fighter who has previously boxed on events involving Floyd Mayweather Jr, faced Cedric Ulrich.

Hamm’s own fight was over quickly. He caught Ghani with a sharp right hand and finished the contest in the first round.

Organisers later said footage of the stoppage had drawn huge attention online, while Hamm, who has a large following on Instagram, shared videos of the crowd and atmosphere from the night.
