South Australia’s incoming Governor Grant Stevens will headline a new event at SkyCity Adelaide this November, bringing the business community together for an important conversation about men’s mental health, wellbeing and resilience.
On Friday 20 November, Showcase SA will host its inaugural International Men’s Day Lunch, featuring Stevens as special guest speaker, with funds raised in support of suicide prevention charity MATES in Construction SA.
Taking place just weeks before Stevens is sworn in as South Australia’s 37th Governor on 9 December, the event will focus on leadership, resilience and the importance of looking out for one another.
Having joined South Australia Police at just 17 years old in 1982, Stevens has spent more than four decades serving the state, including as Police Commissioner since 2015. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic made him one of South Australia’s most recognisable public figures.
Now, as he prepares for his next chapter, Stevens will join business leaders and community members for an afternoon dedicated to conversations that are often overlooked in professional environments.
The event marks a new direction for Showcase SA, which has hosted its popular International Women’s Day Lunch for seven years.
Co-Founder and CEO Steve Testar established Showcase SA in 2019 after moving from England and experiencing firsthand the challenges of building a professional network in a new country.
Today, the organisation hosts more than 50 events annually and connects with more than 4,600 South Australian businesses.
“We have supported International Women’s Day for seven years. It has become one of the events our community looks forward to most, and it works because the conversation in the room is a real one,” Steve said.
“International Men’s Day deserves the same treatment. The societal and health issues affecting the men in our lives are not talked about often enough in business settings, and a room full of people who know each other is a good place to start.”
The lunch will also shine a spotlight on the work of MATES in Construction SA, a charity dedicated to preventing suicide and improving mental health across the construction and allied industries.
Research by the University of Melbourne identified 4,143 suicide deaths among Australian construction workers between 2001 and 2019, highlighting the importance of industry-specific prevention programs.
MATES works directly with workplaces through mental health awareness training, peer support, case management and a 24-hour helpline, helping workers recognise when a colleague may be struggling and connect them with appropriate support.
Presented in partnership with Unified Solar Solutions, and supported by SkyCity Adelaide, NW Group, Zagame Adelaide and Bird Law, the lunch is open to everyone, including non-members.
Guests can attend with colleagues, clients or friends, with the afternoon featuring a sit down two-course lunch, three hour drinks package, and conversations designed to continue well beyond the event itself.
