Fujairah club to stage judo and fencing events

Fujairah Martial Arts Club will host an international judo championship and a combined fencing championship in the first week of May.

The club has also opened registration for new athletes across its combat sports programme. Officials said selections will be made using set criteria, with athletes placed into disciplines based on their ability and long-term potential.

Nader Abu Shawish, the club’s director, said the aim is to improve the standard of both male and female athletes and give them opportunities to compete abroad.

He said the wider goal is to help players improve their international rankings by exposing them to higher-level competition.

Among those due to compete next are Fares Al Baloushi and Al Hayam Al Baloushi, who have been entered for the Senior Fencing World Cup in Shanghai from May 15 to 17.

They are then scheduled to take part in the Senior Asian Championship in India from June 19 to 24, before the Senior World Championship in Hong Kong from July 22 to 31.

Abu Shawish said those events form part of the club’s longer-term plan to strengthen players’ international standing and support their progress towards Olympic qualification.

He said the strategy is built around regular international competition, along with approved training programmes designed to develop athletes to the required standard.

For Fujairah, the hosting of the May championships is part of that same pathway: creating stronger competition at home while preparing athletes for bigger tests abroad.
