The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to spice manufacturers Everest and Laljee Godhoo over food safety non-compliance. Regulatory reviews found heeng powder to be misbranded and substandard, reporting non-permissible alcoholic extracts of 3.29% in yellow heeng and 4.4% in black heeng powder. Compliance issues were also identified in everyday spice blends, including chicken masala, egg curry masala, and garam masala. The regulator noted that the manufacturers failed to comply despite past warnings regarding product safety and pesticide levels exceeding permissible limits, leading to an intensified crackdown on popular kitchen staples.
