Tributes have poured in from across the football world following the death of South Africa international Jayden Adams, who has died at the age of 25, just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 World Cup.
The midfielder featured prominently for Bafana Bafana during the tournament, starting their opening two group-stage matches against Mexico and Czechia before South Africa’s campaign came to an end.
News of Adams’ death has sent shockwaves through South African football, with the talented midfielder widely regarded as one of the country’s brightest young stars.
Reports have said that Adams was found dead at a hotel in Cape Town. The circumstances surrounding his death have not been confirmed.
Less than 24 hours before news of his reported passing emerged, Adams had reposted a photograph of himself and his girlfriend on Instagram.
The South African Football Players Union led the tributes with an emotional statement honouring the midfielder’s career and contribution to the national team.
“The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams,” the statement read.
“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction.

“His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and all those whose lives he touched.
“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Adams enjoyed a rapid rise through South African football after beginning his senior career with Stellenbosch.
His impressive displays earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he continued his development and established himself as a regular international.
Energetic, composed and creative in midfield, Adams quickly became an important figure for South Africa and was expected to play a major role in the national team’s future.
At this summer’s World Cup, he started the 2-0 defeat to Mexico before also featuring in the 1-1 draw with Czechia, helping showcase his ability on football’s biggest stage.
Following reports of his death, supporters also shared an emotional message posted by his girlfriend, Aqueelah Adendorf, before his World Cup debut.
“Watching you achieve something this big has filled my heart with so much pride,” she wrote.
