FIRST LOOK: New Vietnamese eatery brings banh mi, pho and buzz to the Barossa

A new Vietnamese eatery has made its way to the Barossa, and locals and travellers are already making it clear they’re thrilled it’s there.

Viet Street has opened Nuriootpa with a menu centred on Vietnamese street food favourites, bringing banh mi, pho, rice bowls, salad bowls, sticky rice bowls and Vietnamese coffee to the region.

The new eatery opened in early April at 7 Belvidere Road, Nuriootpa.

According to the team behind the new venture, the response during the soft opening phase has been overwhelmingly positive, with people dropping in to say they were excited to have Vietnamese food in the area and grateful for something a little different in the local mix.

That point of difference could prove to be one of Viet Street’s biggest drawcards. While Adelaide has no shortage of places to grab banh mi and pho, the team says it is far less common to find that kind of quick, authentic Vietnamese street food experience in the Barossa, particularly as a casual everyday lunch option.

The Viet Street team are keen to bring a fresh concept to the area, with a thoughtfully designed kitchen and a bright, simple front-of-house that reflects the brand’s style. Owners tell us the aim is to offer approachable, authentic Vietnamese street food, with new recipes inspired by the vibrant street food culture of Ho Chi Minh City, summed up by the venue’s own line: ‘bringing the streets of Vietnam to the Barossa.

Although the team is keeping things fairly low-key while settling into service, opening day offered a promising glimpse of what is to come. Among the early standouts were the roast pork banh mi and combination banh mi.

The menu is designed to be simple and crowd-pleasing. Banh mi is the hero, with fillings including grilled chicken, roast pork with crackling, BBQ pork, tofu and vegan crackling, while pho comes in tender beef, brisket and combination options. Rice bowls, salad bowls and sticky rice bowls round out the savoury offering, alongside classic sides such as cold rolls, spring rolls, dim sims and pork sticks. Vietnamese coffee, served hot or iced, is also available.

It is still early days, but the sense of community is already one of the clearest signs the venue has landed well. Locals and Barossa travellers have reportedly been stopping by, thrilled to see the shop open.

In a close-knit regional community, that kind of word of mouth matters, and it is already helping Viet Street make an impression.

For now, the Barossa’s newest casual dining spot is taking things one step at a time. But if first-day feedback is anything to go by, Viet Street could quickly become a local go-to for banh mi, pho and Vietnamese coffee in the heart of wine country.
