Wonderfully wacky and a great way to fill in a Sunday afternoon or evening

Most of us would have heard of and even played the board game Cluedo. Some of us would have probably seen the stage version earlier this year. Forget them, Deliciously Divergent’s Cluehoe is, as the name might suggest, a Burlesque version. Wonderfully wacky and a great way to fill in a Sunday afternoon or evening, especially if it is pouring with rain outside as it was when reviewed.
Please note that no cast will be named as each Sunday features a totally different group of suspects and corpse. Also, the story is completely different every Sunday. The stories are pre-prepared and do not rely on the audience giving plot suggestions. Here, the audience are the detectives (all not just a select few).
How does it work? I’m glad you asked (otherwise this review would be incredibly short). The whole session is divided into three segments: Investigate; Accuse stating who, what Burlesque prop is the murder weapon, and wear (what Burlesque accessory was the murderer wearing); and Testify. There are three rounds.
As the audience walks into the venue there is the dead body of a Burlesque performer on the ground – good start for a murder mystery. The body (in this case Scaparelli) revives and becomes the emcee. We are introduced to three suspects – this time it was Foxglove, Pistachio and Carboardeaux. You can see that it’s not meant to be taken seriously. To find out the plot there are clues in pink envelopes and tied up scrolls with pink ribbon hidden all around the venue. When you have clues, take a photo of them to refer to during the session as you probably won’t get to hang onto them. Audience members are allowed to “bribe” others by swapping clues. Also, during the course of the show, the cast and emcee (and the show’s producer) bring all the clues around to every table, so everyone has the same chance. You are even allowed to question them all. This was one of the areas where the performers excelled. They not only had to have their character and backstory down pat, but the other three’s as well. Having no idea what the audience would ask them, none of them hesitated in giving answers. Listen very carefully to what they say and their actions – there are many well disguised clues and just as many red herrings.
At the end of each round the audience send their suspicions in via a QR code and the majority answer is decided for that round and whichever character is named must perform a Burlesque number. These were all professionally and well performed by the cast. During the course of the show the audience are alerted to props and accessories that have been eliminated from the process. The killer is, like all good murder mysteries, named at the end. Some will get it right and some won’t.
This is such great fun and the whole concept is extremely well organised. But beware: this is Adult fun and not for the kiddies. And, oh yes, there is a bar!
