This could be my father
I could be his son
feeling an imaginary inheritance
starting me in the face,
a small weight staring you in the face
repeating itself without thought
passed in between generations
a moment following you home afterwards,
a ghost, a moment tangled in paint
a face, a feeling you didn’t know
trapped inside a world from long ago
hoping somebody will recognise it.
(At Stockport Art Gallery until 25 October 2026, the above picture called Negative Space by Peter Holt is on display.
As a member of Write Out Stockport (with other members writing paintings on other poctur) from this, I was commissioned to write a Ekphrastic poem called Father Figure, looking at the picture as a alternative imaginary father figure which can be seen in the picture enclosed. )
