Chelsea have officially announced the arrival of Jordan Henderson, who joins the club as a free agent after departing Brentford by mutual consent.
The 36-year-old England midfielder has penned a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
Henderson is the second veteran recruited by Xabi Alonso this summer, following the acquisition of 35-year-old Danny Welbeck.
The signings represent a notable shift in Chelsea’s transfer approach. The club had not fielded anyone aged over 30 for two years, nor spent money on a player of that age in four.

Alonso is understood to be the driving force behind the new direction, with the manager eager to inject seasoned know-how into a squad widely regarded as lacking sufficient experience.
Henderson spoke of his enthusiasm for the move, citing the calibre of the squad and his respect for the man in charge.
“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” he said.
The midfielder also expressed admiration for the ambition shown by Chelsea’s ownership group.
“I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction,” he added.

Henderson made clear that his focus would extend beyond matchdays, pledging to support those around him at every opportunity.
“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
The approach mirrors a blueprint Alonso deployed to remarkable effect at Bayer Leverkusen, where he turned the club into invincible domestic double winners in 2024.
Prior to that triumph, Leverkusen possessed the Bundesliga’s second youngest squad and had long been known for developing talent rather than collecting silverware. Alonso guided them to sixth place before deciding a winning mentality was needed.
That summer, the club made uncharacteristic moves for Granit Xhaka and Jonas Hofmann, both past 30, while Alex Grimaldo arrived shortly before turning 28. Sporting director Simon Rolfes spoke at the time of providing the team with role models.
The parallels with Chelsea are clear, particularly after the Blues’ poor finish to last season raised serious questions about leadership within the dressing room.
Separately, Chelsea have reached an agreement with Como for the transfer of Trevoh Chalobah.

The deal is valued at an initial £25.7m, with up to £5.1m in additional performance-related payments potentially taking the total fee higher.
Chalobah has already settled personal terms with the Serie A outfit, and the Italian club are now working to complete the formalities after protracted discussions with Chelsea.
As a product of the Cobham academy, the England international’s departure will count entirely as profit on the club’s books.
The defender’s exit comes as Alonso reshapes his squad, balancing the arrival of experienced heads with the sale of homegrown talent to fund the broader summer rebuild at Stamford Bridge.
