Krystian Bielik was allegedly “slapped in the face” by a Portsmouth supporter before appearing to grab the fan by the throat during Cardiff City’s 2-0 Championship defeat at Fratton Park.
The extraordinary confrontation happened in the 70th minute on Saturday, with the newly promoted Bluebirds already trailing by two goals.
Bielik had approached the front row of the stand to retrieve the ball when a young supporter appeared to throw it away from the Cardiff midfielder.
Footage then seemed to show the 28-year-old reaching towards the fan’s neck and pushing them backwards.
The supporter immediately stood up and appeared to attempt to shove Bielik in response as tensions threatened to boil over.
A second fan subsequently threw the ball towards the former Arsenal youngster but instead struck his Cardiff team-mate Perry Ng.
The match was temporarily halted while officials attempted to establish exactly what had happened.
The supporter involved in the initial confrontation was eventually removed from Fratton Park, while Bielik was permitted to continue without receiving any on-field punishment.

Referee Tom Nield held discussions with Portsmouth manager John Mousinho and Cardiff boss Brian Barry-Murphy, as well as the captains of both teams, before play resumed.
Barry-Murphy later claimed Bielik had been struck by the supporter and insisted the referee had dealt with the heated incident appropriately.
“I wanted to make sure he was protected and make sure he was okay, which he is,” said the Cardiff manager.
“I thought the referee and his staff handled the incident impeccably.

“He said he’d seen everything which occurred really clearly, so he diffused the situation and implemented the correct processes from there.
“The players are always subjected to different things that’s not acceptable.
“My job is to protect the players, but really I’m trying to make sure that we play well and win.
“I’m sure the FA will look at it and implement the correct processes.”
Mousinho also apologised to Cardiff and their players, admitting the atmosphere inside Fratton Park had crossed the line.
“The referee said that, as Krystian went to get the ball, there was a little bit of a kerfuffle and one of the supporters struck him,” he said.
“It wasn’t a good incident. I have just seen him there, and he was OK, but that’s not the point, we can’t be having that.
“We want to create a really difficult atmosphere at Fratton Park, we have done that successfully over the past few years.
“Sometimes it tips over, I understand that, I don’t think it needs to tip over to that extent.
“We extend our apologies to the players, Cardiff and make sure we can try to cut it out.”
Bielik was making only his fourth appearance for the Cardiff, having joined the Welsh club last month.
The Football Association is now expected to examine the incident and could review footage before deciding whether any further action is required.
