Dubai Desert Classic keeps green golf status

The Hero Dubai Desert Classic has retained its GEO Certified sustainability accreditation for the fourth year in a row.

The Dubai event becomes the first golf tournament in the Middle East to hold the certification across four consecutive editions. It is also the first Rolex Series event on the DP World Tour to reach the same mark.

The announcement was made on June 5, World Environment Day.

GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf awards the certification after an independent review of how an event is run. That includes tournament operations, community work, environmental measures and plans for longer-term impact.

The Hero Dubai Desert Classic has made sustainability a regular part of its event planning in recent years. The retained certification gives the tournament another marker as Dubai continues to stage major international sports events with greater attention on environmental standards.

Simon Corkill, Executive Tournament Director of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, said the latest accreditation showed the work of those involved in delivering the tournament.

“Retaining this sustainability certification for a fourth consecutive year is a significant achievement and reflects the commitment of everyone involved in delivering the tournament,” Corkill said.

“Sustainability has become an integral part of our planning and decision-making process.”

“We remain focused on developing initiatives that reduce environmental impact, create positive social outcomes, and leave a lasting legacy for the tournament.”

The certification adds to the tournament’s standing within regional golf, with the Dubai event continuing to set a benchmark for sustainability in the Middle East.
