Jaylen Brown’s candid comments on a Twitch stream on Sunday night have drawn plenty of criticism across the sports world.
Be it sports pundits like Stephen A. Smith or former NBA players like Kendrick Perkins, Brown’s remarks that called out the officiating and Joel Embiid’s flopping after the 76ers’ first-round victory are putting the Celtics star in some hot water.
“Flopping has ruined our game. Joel Embiid is a great player, one of the best bigs in [expletive] basketball history. [He] flops. He knows it,” Brown said. “It’s not breaking news.”
Brown’s comments also ruffled the feathers of Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, who addressed the remarks on his podcast this week.
For the outspoken Green, Brown’s comments are more of a bad look due to the timing, as Embiid and the Sixers erased a 3-1 series deficit and eliminated Brown and the Celtics just a day before Brown’s Twitch stream.
“As you all know, not a huge fan of calling a guy out once you lost,” Green said. “I just don’t love that because it comes off as excuse-making. A lot of people are trying to say, ‘Aw, man. Jaylen Brown is making an excuse.’ When you, in fact, could be telling a dead-honest truth. But because you lost, people are always going to say, ‘There’s the excuse.’ So they’re going to make out what you’re saying as an excuse. “So ultimately, it doesn’t hold weight.
“I feel like you end up wasting one of your bullets because it doesn’t hold weight anyway because you lost and people just charge it to, ‘Aw, man. He only saying that because he lost. Would he have said that if he won?’ Honestly, you don’t know the answer because he didn’t win. I’m always very skeptical about saying things like this after a loss just because people take it and do what they want to do with the statement. Make it out to be what they want to be.”
Perkins — who played for the Celtics from 2003-11 — took issue with Brown venting after a series where Boston dropped its final three games against Philadelphia, including two losses at TD Garden in Games 5 and 7.
“Take ownership. Zero excuses,” Perkins said. “I don’t want to hear this [expletive]. Philadelphia 76ers kicked y’all a**, they did what they’re supposed to do, y’all didn’t do anything from the coaches on down to you JB, and I love you. I voted for you, you finished top-5 in my MVP vote.
“But, y’all didn’t get it done. Didn’t cut the mustard. That’s the agenda.”
