Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson would walk back his initial comments after fans were showering him with boos.
As the Cleveland Browns picked Deshaun Watson to start for the team over Shedeur Sanders, there is no denying the myriad of opinions that have formed around the decision. With the news of Browns fans booing Watson during recent preseason performances, he called out those people for doing so, but he has not walked back some of the comments.
Speaking to the media on Monday after being selected to be Cleveland’s starting quarterback, Watson apologized for his initial thoughts, saying his emotions got the best of him.
“I think human nature, just myself being very emotional, putting a lot of time these last two years to get back and spend time in this facility, in the city, meeting a lot of different people in the community, thought I was going to get a little different response, but I think my emotions got the best of me, and my comments wasn’t intending to go at any of the fans around in the city because there’s been a lot of great fans that have been supporting me,” Watson said.

The boos were really highlighted towards Watson after the Browns’ 31-7 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, where the veteran threw for 36 yards and a pick on completing five of 12 pass attempts, recording a 14.6 quarterback rating. Playing for most of the second half, Watson would be showered with boos, saying after the game that “it has nothing to do with the performance” and how it was “more personal,” calling it “disrespectful.”
“I know the frustration this organization has put in, a lot of investment in coming to get me back in ’22, and things haven’t been going in the right direction that we thought it was. You know, a lot of injuries, a lot of time off, and not putting the best football and my foot forward. So again, I understand the frustration. I understand everything that kind of goes into that,” Watson said.
At any rate, Watson will start for Cleveland over Sanders when the regular season opens on Sept. 13 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
