On July 6, the Delhi High Court asked the Centre to respond to petitions filed by members and staff of the Delhi Gymkhana Club challenging a show cause notice seeking their eviction from the club’s 27.3-acre premises.
Justice Avneesh Jhingan issued notice to the Centre on applications seeking a stay on the eviction proceedings and posted the matter for July 28. The court also directed the government to defer the July 7 hearing before the estate officer until after the next court hearing.
The petitions challenge the June 29 showcause notice, which requires the club to explain why it should not be evicted under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971.
