Danika Mason: ABC staff mock Nine reporter after viral TV interview of her slurring words at Winter Olympics

As if Danika Mason’s week wasn’t been bad enough, now her rivals over at ABC are sticking the boot in.

The Nine reporter found herself in hot water after slurring her words during a live TV cross from the Winter Olympics in Livigno on Wednesday.

On Thursday, she apologised to viewers admitting that she should not have gone on air after drinking.

“I also wanted to thank everyone who has reached out. I’m just a little bit embarrassed.

“Look, I totally misjudged a situation. I shouldn’t have had a drink, and especially in these conditions.

“It’s cold, we’ve got altitude, and not having had dinner probably didn’t help as well.”

The incident sparked questions from insiders over why producers and Today Show presenters Karl Stefanovic and Jayne Azzopardi didn’t step in to cut her off and instead allowed her to continue after it became apparent she was struggling to string a sentence together.

Now it has emerged that staff at the public broadcaster had some fun at her expense in an internal daily email update titled ‘Winter Olympics content’.

The email chain has been providing daily updates to about 1800 staff and on Friday gave an update on the ABC’s snowman looking worse for wear, The Australian reports.

“Update on our Snowman who may have been out late last night with a rival network’s presenter,” the email read, alongside a picture of a bedraggled-looking snowman with wonky eyes.

Mason reportedly had two glasses of wine over dinner with her Nine colleagues, but nothing to eat for dinner before fronting up to the cameras for her now infamous interview.

During the live cross she said: “The price of coffee over here is actually fine. It’s actually the price of coffee in the US we have to get used to. I’m not sure about the iguanas?” she said to a confused Stefanovic and Azzopardi.

“Where are we going with that one?” Mason added.

As the interview progressed Mason’s speech became slurred and she stumbled over words while reporting outside in the cold.

At one point, she jumped into a pile of snow to giggle about how much there was.
