Thousands of gallons of water rushed into the roadways early Friday, requiring repairs that will continue into Saturday.
A large water main break flooded streets in Boston’s Financial District around midnight Friday, closing roads near South Station and prompting an emergency response.
Crews with the Boston Water and Sewer Commission worked near the busy commuter hub early Friday morning after water poured through surrounding roadways overnight. The broken main impacted parts of Summer, Federal, Congress, and Purchase streets, according to The Boston Globe.
City officials said shortly before 6:30 a.m. that crews had shut down the 16-inch water main responsible for the flooding. The break did not affect water service for nearby residents or businesses, officials said.
The flooding had largely receded by Friday morning, but crews kept portions of Purchase Street blocked off as they worked to clean up the area. The Interstate-93 southbound off-ramp serving South Station and the Mass Pike were also temporarily closed amid the response.
The commission said they would defer repairs to the broken main until Saturday so drivers could access the roadways on Friday, the Globe reported.
Photos published by Boston 25 showed water covering large portions of the roadway as emergency crews blocked off the area.
Officials have not said what caused the water main break.
