The Onkaparinga Council have finally approved plans for the Break Surf and Stay, a 7.5ha complex at Aldinga proposed to include wave pools for surfers, 35 villas and a licensed restaurant.
The project is run be a collective of surfers with leading expertise across different industries.
“At every stage of the design and planning process, we have worked tirelessly to ensure The Break reflects global best practice while aligning with broader community expectations,” the project team said.
“We are pleased to have received planning consent for our updated plans, confirming that our refreshed vision for The Break suits not only our parcel of tourism-zoned land but the wider region and its thriving tourism landscape.
“Although that means the process has taken longer than expected, it also means our designs have been refined to a point where we’re on track to be shovel ready and the results are set to be outstanding,” they said.
Surrounding the lagoon will be beachside hospitality, a wellness studio, skateable landscaping, luxury surf villas and more. This is all within walking distance of the breathtaking scenery, coastal walks and cycling trails that Aldinga has to offer.
“We thank the local community for their patience and their unwavering support – we see the supporter groups and thousands of comments on social media, and we can’t wait to get The Break underway so that the Mid Coast can enjoy safe, reliable surf, new employment and a world-class tourism drawcard.”
So what does this massive new project actually bring South Australia?
The surf itself will be powered by the latest Endless Surf technology, serving up a consistent, near perfect surfing experience. The development will feature a central 12,000 sqm wave lagoon accommodating up to 64 surfers at a time, powered by cutting-edge pneumatic technology from Endless Surf capable of producing waves up to 2.1 metres high.
Visitors are encouraged to stay in one of the 35 surf villas on the southern side of the lagoon, which blend perfectly in with the natural surroundings. There’ll also be a day spa and beachside hospitality spaces to enjoy food and drink offerings. The dedicated health and wellness spaces offers a yoga studio, treatment rooms, heat contrast therapy and the latest rehab treatments.
For the surfers, a surf academy with personalised programs will be available along with a spot to get the best clothes, equipment and bathers.
The team are working with local experts across design, planning, architecture and hospitality to create a unique experience that seamlessly blends with the character of the Fleurieu coast.
The design incorporates thoughtfully placed lighting to suit the low-lying built form, revised seasonal opening hours, and regionally inspired architecture by award-winning Studio Gram.
Privately funded with the help of a $5 million loan from the State Government’s Business Growth Fund, first waves are pencilled in for the summer of 2027/28.
