Could Summer Street Close During the World Cup? MBTA Proposes Temporary Shutdown Near South Station
The World Cup is coming to town, and it could mean some big traffic changes around South Station this summer. According to WBZ NewsRadio, the MBTA is asking the City of Boston for permission to temporarily close a section of Summer Street between Atlantic Avenue and Dorchester Avenue during all seven World Cup matches at Gillette Stadium.
The MBTA expects up to 20,000 fans to travel through South Station on game days, and officials say the closure would help manage crowds and improve safety. The proposed shutdown would last about 10 hours per match day.
Not everyone is on board with the idea. Some city officials are worried the closure could create major traffic headaches in an already busy area and believe it should only happen as a last resort. Meanwhile, some commuters and residents say the temporary inconvenience is worth it if it helps keep things moving safely during the international event.
World Cup matches at Gillette Stadium are scheduled throughout June and July, and Boston is expected to see a major influx of visitors during the tournament.
