A local Congress leader and former panchayat president was shot dead by an unidentified assailant who was accompanied by an associate in Karnataka’s Udupi district.
The victim has been identified as David D’Souza, who was a contractor by profession. The killing, which took place on Friday, was caught on CCTV. The video shows a man approaching from behind as an unsuspecting D’Souza was getting inside his car parked on a roadside.
The man then pulls out a gun and fires several shots at the Congress leader from point-blank range. The armed attacker’s aide immediately rushed in on a motorbike and the duo fled the scene.
Meanwhile, the attack left D’Souza critically injured. He succumbed to his wound while being shifted to a hospital.
The motive behind the killing was not immediately known. Police have launched an investigation and are working to identify and trace the attackers.
The shooting sent shock waves through the local political and business circles, as D’Souza was a well-known figure in the region.
Senior police officers reached the spot soon after the incident and began collecting evidence. Investigators will examine the CCTV footage from the area and speak to witnesses to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Police said further details would emerge as the investigation progresses and efforts are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing.
