Over $150,000 have been raised for a South Shore man who lost both legs due to septic shock, just days after his brother’s wedding in Mumbai, the man’s GoFundMe said.
In February, Andrew Wasil and his family traveled to Mumbai, India, to celebrate his brother’s wedding. Wasil even served as the best man, the page said.
But, just one day after the festivities, Wasil contracted a “dangerous strep throat infection” and was hospitalized. The infection quickly worsened and Wasil went into septic shock, the fundraiser said.
“Despite expert treatment, Andrew’s illness led to multiple organ complications and extensive treatment in the ICU, where he is still receiving treatment over 6 weeks later,” the GoFundMe said.
Due to the severity of the infection, doctors were forced to amputate both of Wasil’s legs in a life saving operation, the page said.
Wasil’s sister, a Braintree resident, set up a GoFundMe to help supplement medical costs, including an “air ambulance” trip that would bring Wasil back to Boston, the fundraiser said.
The medic flight costs over $200,000, and requires an upfront payment. The trip is not covered by insurance, the fundraiser said.
After received more than $180,000 in donations, Wasil’s family was able to pay for the flight, the page said.
“This is a huge step forward in getting him safely home. The cost of the medical air ambulance is $248,000.00 and thanks to your charitable donations, we have been able to cover the upfront cost needed to make this happen,” the GoFundMe said in an update posted Wednesday.
Wasil is currently medically stable, but has not regained “full consciousness.” However, he has been “showing encouraging signs and is fighting hard,” the GoFundMe said.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all your compassionate love and support,” the Wasil family said in an GoFundMe update.
