Korean food has been a bit of trend here in Adelaide as of recent, with multiple new venues inspired by the tasty cuisine opening or still to come.
It certainly has a place in our Adelaide foodie scene and recently a new CBD venue has been the talk of the town. Bornga is a Korean BBQ restaurant brand hailing from South Korea and currently has venues all over the nation, from Haymarket and Rhodes in Sydney to Melbourne and Brisbane CBDs.
Adelaide fans have been sussing the scene on Field Street, just off Gouger Street, in the thick of the Adelaide Central Market and Chinatown end of town, surrounded by some of the city’s best food spots. This is where the newest Bornga has been spotted, with the glowing sign giving away the venues’ mystery identity.
At Bornga’s Australian venues, the experience centres on traditional Korean barbecue cooked over premium charcoal, with grilled meats wrapped in lettuce with ssamjang and shared alongside banchan, stews, noodles and other classic Korean dishes.
But Bornga all started in a Nonhyun-dong eatery alley of Gangnam in 1993, and Bornga is the high-quality Korean restaurant with reasonable prices. Its branches spread into major cities around the world to promote deep and various tastes of authentic Korean dishes.
Bornga started its business in Nonhyun-dong eatery alley of Gangnam in 1993 the recipes were developed by Baek Jong-won, CEO, through many years of research.
Jong-won originally started Bornga to feed his long wish of globalising korean dished which cater to not only locals but foreigners. At the time there were no world famous Korean dishes, even though the popularity of charcoal barbecue dining.

Bornga is best known for its woo-samgyup, a specialty dish made from thinly sliced beef brisket, lightly marinated and usually grilled then wrapped in lettuce with ssamjang.
CEO Back Jong-won developed Woo-samgyup by slicing beef brisket/flank against the grain and lightly marinating with the special sauce, which has long been loved by all.
Beyond its signature barbecue, Bornga’s menu has a broad mix of classic Korean dishes that make the experience a bit more diverse. The official Bornga menu is split into categories including barbecue, traditional dishes, stews and hot pots, rice and noodle dishes, and side dishes, which gives us a good idea about what to expect at the Adelaide venue.
Dishes seen at other Australian venues include hearty items like kimchi stew, soft tofu stew and soybean paste stew, alongside staples such as bibimbap, japchae, seafood pancake and tteokbokki. There are also rice-based dishes, cold noodles and shared plates.
Basically if you’re a fan of Korean BBQ, this is probably going to be a place you’ll head to when opening dates are announced.
Guess we’ll all be keeping our eye on the venue as it undergoes renovations to hopefully become Adelaide’s newest Korean BBQ hotspot.
Update 20/04: Bornga Adelaide has now opened in Adelaide Chinatown. Opening hours are: Monday closed, Tues-Fri 5-10pm, Sat-Sun 11.30am-2pm and 5-10pm.
