COMING SOON: Caramella Patisserie is bringing decades of European baking expertise to Hutt Street

“I’m doing my desserts the traditional way.”

Sweet tooths, listen up! We’ve got a new Adelaide dessert destination to add to your “need to try” list.

Caramella Patisserie is the latest addition to Adelaide’s slew of specialty dessert shops – but they’re not promising anything out-of-the-box like blueberry matcha scrolls or drink-dessert hybrids.

Instead, they’re focused on hand-crafting some of the best artisanal European pastries going around, with plans to serve up equally excellent coffee to match.

But the story behind Caramella stretches far beyond Hutt Street. Founder and head chef, Manolis, began baking at just 12 years old, going on to spend 30 years working as a pastry chef in Greece before travelling through some of the world’s pastry capitals -including Belgium, France and Italy.

Needless to say, he’s no stranger to a bit of flour and a rolling pin.

After arriving in Australia, the family ran a well-loved bakery in Darwin for many years, but after several trips to Adelaide, they knew that moving to SA was the next step.

“We’ve fallen in love with Adelaide. It feels very European here,” tells owner and wife to Manolis, Isabella.

Adelaide is lucky to have them. Bringing a traditional approach to European baking, Caramella feels grounded in the classics.

“There’s not a lot of shops in Australia that make traditional sweets with proper custard creams”.

“Back in the day, we didn’t have premixes, so we had to do all the recipes from scratch. I’m keeping all these years, this philosophy, and I’m doing my desserts with a traditional way”, explains Manolis.

Inside, the space itself mirrors that same philosophy.

“When we came to Adelaide and saw the shop, it had a lot of the elements that I was looking for already here,” their daughter, Anna, explained.

“Everything is white and the tables are wooden. We didn’t change that much, we just needed to find a way to place everything.”

The result is a calm, European-inspired space that lets the pastries do the talking – light, airy, and filled with understated colours and textures (and no, we’re not talking about the pastries, although we’re sure you could probably describe them in much the same way).

Building on their Darwin offering, the family is planning a much wider range of traditional sweets, pastries and baked goods. Anna even teased that Greek-style pies could make their way onto the menu in the future. And good news, they don’t want anyone to miss out.

“We’ll try and make dairy-free, lactose-free and wheat-free options as well,” Anna added.

So for those who normally go against the grain or dodge the dairy, you won’t have to skip this one.

With a range of specialty Easter and Christmas treats planned, Anna emphasised that food and sweets are truly a family affair, which is something they want to convey to their customers.

“A lot of Greeks and Italians, when you go to each other’s house, it’s tradition to bring sweets to the other person. It’s very family orientated”.

But, if you’re looking for a recommendation on what to try on a first visit, might we suggest taking Anna’s advice.

“My favourite is the mini-eclairs,” she said.

“It’s [my Dad’s] speciality.”

I don’t know about you, but all too often I forget just how good a proper chocolate éclair or baklava can be- until I stumble across one again and think, “gosh, where have you been in my regular dessert rotation?”

Hopefully, Caramella Patisserie will cement itself in Adelaide’s dessert spotlight, so there won’t have to be so long in-between sweet stops.
