Cherizza Filamor is not unfamiliar to the hustle and bustle of kitchens and restaurants.
With more than two decades of professional culinary experience in the hospitality industry, the Filipino chef is definitely qualified to finally be having a place of her own.
Bun voyage is the newest name to be gracing Grenfell Street in Adelaide. Best known for its sweet and soft scroll offering, the venture has a history began with an at home creation and delivery service.
But before too long the concept was picked up through the Adelaide Central Market Producer in Residence program.
“The response, repeat customers and continued orders afterwards gave me the confidence to create a permanent CBD home,” Cherizza said.
Officially opening on September 1, the first day of spring, Cherizza said she couldn’t think of a more fitting time for not only herself but her bun Voyage family to start it’s next chapteer.
“Spring represents new beginnings and growth, which feels very connected to both the journey of the business and my own journey.”
The hero of Bun Voyage is the rich Brioche cinnamon scroll bun smothered with a signature cream cheese frosting.
“Rather than creating a large traditional bakery menu, I wanted to take one familiar product and let it travel around the world through flavour.”
This is why each bun features a unique topping inspired by a different culture that aims to take you on a journey around the world.
From Manila with organic ube and vintage cheddar, Dubai with dark chocolate, pistachio and kataifi, Amalfi with lemon and even Paris inspired with a crème brûlée topping, you can really go anywhere.
“We also plan to create special flavours every season, that’s the beauty of this concept, the possibilities of creating new flavours are endless,” Cherizza said.
For the non-sweet tooths, Bun Voyage will also have savoury filled options like Delhi Butter Chicken, Acapulco Beef Birria, Cebu Pork Humba and a vegetarian pick with housemade basil pesto, fresh tomatoes and stracciatella.
For drinks, their Signature Barako Brew will be on offer, made with Barako coffee beans from the Philippines.
“As a Filipino chef, it’s a small way for me to bring a flavour from home into Bun Voyage and share something that has a personal connection to my background.”
Bun Voyage’s new home on Grenfell Street
For Cherizza, Bun Voyage is about taking something people know and love, and using it as a way to discover something new.
“My love for bread-making really goes back to my childhood,” she said.
“In the Philippines, one of my strongest food memories is waking up in the morning to the smell of freshly baked bread coming from the local panaderia, the neighbourhood bakery.
“That smell meant breakfast, comfort and home, and I think that memory has stayed with me throughout my career.”
At the end of the day, Bun Voyage is about travelling the world, but just a little closer to home, and one bun at a time.
