Cole Palmer confirms stance on Manchester United transfer links ahead of key clash

Cole Palmer has put to bed rumours of links to Manchester United ahead of a key clash between Chelsea and the Red Devils.

The two sides are in pursuit of the Champions League next season, with United firmly in the driving seat, currently sitting seven points ahead of the Blues in fifth.

There has been much speculation about whether Palmer would return to Manchester, having grown up in Wythenshawe and being a boyhood United fan.

The attacking midfielder joined Chelsea in a £42.5million deal after spending 13 years at Manchester City, amid claims he was homesick in London.

Palmer, who is under contract till 2033, has dismissed the speculation saying: “Everyone just talks.”

He told The Guardian: “When I see it, I just laugh. Obviously, Manchester is my home. All my family are there, but I don’t miss it.

“Maybe I’ll miss it if I don’t go for three months or something. But then, when I get home, I think there’s nothing there for me anyway.”

Palmer shared that he and club captain Reece James spoke to the owners about their future at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “I’ve got no plans to move from Chelsea. We’ve still got a lot to play for.

“We’ve got the FA Cup semi-final, and if we finish in a Champions League spot, it puts us in a good position to sign players that we need.

“We spoke to the owners, and they’re sure of the players that are gonna do it. Reece won’t sign a six-year contract if he’s not spoken to the owners and the directors.

“Me and Reece spoke a lot. About things we need, players we need to sign and how things need to be. He wouldn’t sign a new contract if he didn’t know what was going on.”

Palmer has scored 43 goals in 97 appearances over his first couple of seasons with the Blues, but has struggled for form as of late.

In a tricky tenure this year, Chelsea’s key man has only managed 10 goals, with an uphill battle to try and secure Champions League football.

Liam Rosenior’s side are winless in their last three, after defeats to Newcastle and Manchester City at home and a crushing 3-0 defeat against David Moyes’s Everton.

The Blues also crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of holders PSG, 8-2 on aggregate.

Earlier this week, Rosenior noted that his side are “running out of time” to get the points needed to qualify for the Champions League next season.

He said: “As the season goes on, the less games you have left, the more important the games become. We have to take advantage of this moment.

“We’re running out of time. We need to show that initiative on Saturday evening, and we need to play on the front foot, and we need to make up those points, which is still definitely possible.”

Chelsea still have high hopes in the FA Cup, which could end up being an alternative route into Europe next season.

After hammering League One side Port Vale 7-0, the Blues face Leeds United in the semi-finals, who advanced past West Ham in the quarter-finals on penalties.
