Chery Stockman: Details about diesel plug-in hybrid ute revealed

Chery has released some further details about the Stockman ute, which will land in Australian showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2026.

The Stockman will initially only be available with 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Chery has now revealed this setup generates a total of 350kW and 800Nm, and will drive all four wheels.

That said, we’re none-the-wiser on the outputs of the diesel engine or electric motors, nor the type of transmission it uses.

We also don’t know the capacity of the battery pack, but the Stockman diesel PHEV will have an electric driving range of up to 100km, although this is under the more generous NEDC standard, rather than WLTP.

As a diesel plug-in hybrid, the Stockman has an unbraked towing capacity of 750kg, and a braked towing capacity of 3500kg.

The Stockman has double wishbone front suspension, and a leaf spring setup at the rear, but there’s no word, yet, about its cargo rating, although Chery had earlier indicated some variants will have a payload rating of up to 1000kg. The cargo tub measures 1560mm long, 1560mm wide, and 500mm tall.

Measuring 5450mm long, 2010mm wide, 1890mm tall, and riding on a 3250mm wheelbase, the Stockman is 100 to 200mm longer, and at least 100mm wider than the top-selling Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.

Chery says the Stockman has been designed to “tackle challenging terrain”. To that end, the Stockman has over 247mm of ground clearance, standard all-terrain tyres, and individually selectable front, centre and rear differential locks.

The automaker has released some extra images of its first-ever ute for the Australian market. In these photos we can see the car’s lie-flat front passenger seat, and the design of its head up display. We have more of the car’s interior from our experience at an earlier hands-on event.

Full details and specifications for the Stockman diesel plug-in hybrid ute will be released closer to its launch later this year. A petrol plug-in hybrid drivetrain will join the range some time in 2027.
