Canberra end Melbourne City’s undefeated home & away streak

Canberra United have have snapped Melbourne City’s record Ninja A-League home & away unbeaten streak with a 2-1 win at McKellar Park.

United stunned City with a two goal salvo inside seven minutes just after half time, with Emma Hawkins and Michelle Heyman scoring in the 52nd and 59th minutes respectively.

Holly McNamara provided City some hope from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute but Canberra stood firm to hand them their first loss in a home and away league match since March 2024.

Both goals were characterised by quality play from the wings, with Nanako Sasaki hanging up a ball for Hawks at the back post that she almost couldn’t help but score off seven minutes after half time.

Sasaki was involved again Just seven minutes later, raking a ball across the field for Hayley Taylor-Young to pop across to the evergreen Michelle Heyman for what proved to be the decisive goal.

McNamara’s goal from the spot after Tegan Bertolissio took down Aideen Keane in the area meant the last 20 minutes were tense for Canberra, but they stood up to consolidate their position at the top of the Ninja A-League table.
