Boston just ranked No. 1 city in the U.S. to work in

Boston is the best city in the U.S. to work in, according to a new ranking from Indeed.

The Boston-Cambridge-Newton area ranked No. 1 overall among 228 U.S. cities with populations of more than 200,000, based on six categories: job opportunity, compensation, job quality and security, career mobility and dynamism, work-life balance and flexibility, and economic opportunity.

“For job seekers, the Boston-Cambridge ecosystem offers unusually strong access to healthcare, biotechnology and life sciences, higher education, and technology and professional services,” Indeed said in its ranking.

“It’s a city that’s grounded in its founding values, but is also always looking forward,” Diane Nishigaya MacGillivray, senior vice president for advancement at Northeastern University, told Indeed.

Boston strongest score came in career mobility, where it ranked No. 2. It also ranked No. 5 for economic opportunity, No. 6 for job compensation, No. 7 for job quality and security, No. 13 for work-life balance and flexibility, and No. 14 for job opportunity, based on public and proprietary data.

Beyond Boston, the Greater Washington, D.C. area ranked No. 2 overall, while Burlington, Vermont came in at No. 3.

Washington, D.C. ranked No. 1 for career mobility and No. 3 for compensation.

Burlington-South Burlington, with a population of about 228,000, was the smallest metro area on the list. Overall, however, it ranked No. 1 for job opportunity and No. 2 for economic opportunity, though it landed lower for career mobility.
