Bittu Tabahi Cleans Ajnar River Alone

In Madhya Pradesh, the Ajnar River was once the lifeline of its town.

Over time, that lifeline began to choke.

Plastic waste piled up along its banks. Drainage pipes emptied directly into its waters. The stench grew so unbearable that people stopped going near it. What was once a shared public space slowly turned into a neglected, polluted stretch — ignored by most who lived around it.

But this Republic Day, something changed.

A 19-year-old, Bittu Tabahi, decided to act.

Armed with garbage bags he bought himself, Bittu walked to the river and began cleaning it — alone.

In just one and a half months, Bittu has removed over two truckloads of waste — nearly 10 kilos every single day. Slowly, the impact is becoming visible.

Every day, between 3 pm and 6 pm, he shows up. Wading through sludge, enduring the overpowering smell, and picking through layers of waste, he works steadily, often without help. The conditions are far from easy. There are snakes in the area, and the risk of infection is real. Yet, he continues.

Because, for him, this is not just about cleaning garbage.

It is about restoring the town’s water source.

In just one and a half months, Bittu has removed over two truckloads of waste — nearly 10 kilos every single day. Slowly, the impact is becoming visible.

The ghats that people once avoided are seeing visitors again. Families are returning. Children are beginning to play by the riverbanks.

A space that was abandoned is coming back to life.

For Bittu, cleaning the river is not an extraordinary act. It is a responsibility — a reminder that water is irreplaceable, and that neglect comes at a cost.

His effort also raises a larger question.

If one person can show up every day and make a difference, what is stopping the rest of us?

In a town that once turned away from its river, one teenager’s persistence is quietly becoming a wake-up call on civic sense.
