BBC viewers left baffled by Danny Murphy’s depressing cat story during live World Cup match

Danny Murphy delivered one of the most unexpected moments of this World Cup during BBC’s coverage of the Ivory Coast versus Norway round of 32 clash earlier today.

The former Liverpool midfielder, working as co-commentator alongside Steve Bower, seized upon a rather unusual opportunity when Fulham’s Oscar Bobb came on as a substitute for Norway.

With the Scandinavians leading 1-0, Murphy waited for a quiet spell in the action following a hydration break before sharing a deeply personal tale about his missing cat – who just happened to share a name with the player who’d just entered the pitch.

As Bobb touched the ball for the first time, Bower noted: “Here’s Bobb’s first involvement.” What followed was a ten-second silence before Murphy chimed in with: “I used to have a cat called Bob.”

Bower quipped back: “The game’s not that bad,” but Murphy pressed on regardless.

“Yeah, he jumped in the back of a Royal Mail van, and we lost him,” the pundit revealed.

“Sad really. Anyway,” Murphy added with a laugh, leaving his colleague to steer things back to the football.

“Anyway, 18 minutes to go, the Ivory Coast need a goal,” Bower said, moving proceedings along.

The moment sparked a flurry of reactions online, with opinions firmly split down the middle.

The Football Ramble declared it “truly iconic commentary,” while plenty of viewers drew comparisons to Steve Coogan’s beloved character.

“Pure Partridge from Danny Murphy,” one account on X posted, with another adding: “Easily the best bit of commentary from Danny Murphy ever. Full Partridge.”

Not everyone was quite so charmed, mind you.

“Riveting analysis from Danny Murphy here,” one viewer remarked sarcastically, while another questioned: “Sorry, how is Danny Murphy a real commentator?”

Some viewers were genuinely impressed by Murphy’s delivery, though.

“Incredible. The comedic timing of ‘sad really’ is just masterful. Danny Murphy, I wasn’t familiar with your game,” one fan wrote.

Others took a more investigative approach to the tale, with one suggesting: “I think it must be some version of an ‘off to live on a farm’ thing his parents told him? This needs the full true crime podcast treatment. Justice for Bob.”

As for the actual football, Ivory Coast equalised through Amad Diallo barely a minute after Murphy’s tribute, before Erling Haaland struck four minutes from time to send Norway through to the last 16.
