Award-winning Adelaide Hills restaurant Ondeen to reopen after shock closure

The farm-to-table restaurant, cellar door and distillery has confirmed its cellar door will reopen this Sunday, August 16, with the restaurant expected to follow mid next week.

The news comes following a Supreme Court hearing on Friday morning, with Ondeen co-founder and managing director Deborah Kingsbury saying court orders had been put in place allowing the business to reopen.

“We are pleased that following a Supreme Court hearing this morning, court orders have been put in place that will allow us to re-open,” Deborah said.

“We are thrilled to be re-opening our doors this Sunday for Cellar Door customers with the restaurant re-opening mid next week.”

It marks a major turnaround for the Adelaide Hills destination, which was unexpectedly closed on Monday, August 3 following the termination of its lease.

The closure sparked considerable uncertainty for staff, suppliers and customers, particularly couples who had weddings and events booked at the venue.

Ondeen previously said it was pursuing legal options following the closure. The venue’s landlord had said the lease was terminated for default, while Ondeen disputed the circumstances surrounding the termination.

Now, less than two weeks later, the team is preparing to welcome customers back.

“Our heartfelt thanks for the extraordinary support we have received, which has carried us through,” Deborah said.

“From our wonderful team and staff, our suppliers, event bookings, brides and grooms to our huge network of family and friends – your support has been tremendous.”

She also gave a special mention to Ondeen’s Highland cows, saying the team “can’t wait to see them again”.

The Verdun venue opened in 2024 and quickly established itself among the Adelaide Hills’ notable dining destinations, with its offering spanning farm-to-table dining, wine, spirits and events.

The team is now encouraging customers to return, including those looking to rebook functions and events.

“We are encouraging everyone to please come back in, book a table, support us and rebook your events,” Deborah said.

“We would love to see our community visit us and connect back in with the spirit of Ondeen.”

The cellar door will reopen on Sunday, August 16, with the restaurant reopening mid next week.
