The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Monday, with the death toll rising to 100 after two more deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, according to an official bulletin. More than 1.37 lakh people are affected by the deluge across seven districts.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said 456 villages are under water and 11,933.46 hectares of crop area have been damaged. The administration is also running 125 relief camps and relief distribution centres in six districts, where 49,061 people are being sheltered at present.
According to ASDMA’s daily flood bulletin issued on Sunday night, the two latest deaths were reported from Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts. With these, the total number of people who have died in this year’s floods has gone up to 100.
ASDMA’s daily flood report said more than 1,37,500 people have been affected in Charaideo, Darrang, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts. Golaghat is the worst-hit district, with almost 70,000 people affected, followed by Sivasagar with nearly 40,000 and Jorhat with more than 16,000 people facing floodwaters.
An ASDMA official said several rivers are flowing above the danger mark, raising the threat to new areas. She said the Dhansiri river at Golaghat and Numaligarh, and the Kushiyara river at Sribhumi, are flowing above the danger level.
“Due to a steady rise in the water level of Dhansiri in Golaghat district, people have been advised to stay away from the river,” she added.
Overall, the flood situation in Assam remained severe, with rising deaths, large-scale inundation, damage to crops and thousands of people continuing to depend on relief support.
