The 14-year-old was found submerged in about 10 to 12 feet of water, authorities say.

An eighth-grade student at Doherty Middle School in Andover has died after he was pulled from a pond in Harold Parker State Forest last month, school officials announced.

Cody Nguyen, 14, died Friday following a “medical emergency” at Field Pond in May, Doherty Middle School Principal Rebecca Perry and Andover Public Schools Interim Superintendent Keith Taverna said in a message to the school community Saturday

Nguyen was hospitalized after authorities responded to Field Pond on May 19 for a report of a boy submerged in the water, according to the Andover Police Department

First responders arrived to find a group of juveniles directing them to the area where Nguyen had last been seen. He was located about 25 feet from shore in approximately 10 to 12 feet of water, police said.

Emergency personnel provided medical care before he was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, authorities said.

“We extend our deepest condolences and support to Cody’s family,” Perry and Taverna wrote. “We understand that this loss may bring a range of emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school community, especially for our students, and we are here to support one another.”

The district’s crisis support team will be available to students, staff, and families, school officials said. Social workers and guidance counselors would be available at the Doherty Media Center Monday and Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., they said.

Perry also shared additional resources for families seeking guidance on discussing grief and loss with children.

According to his obituary, Nguyen was known for expressing himself through fashion and enjoyed playing basketball and spending time on his PC. He is survived by his parents, two older brothers, extended family members, and his dog.

“We are heartbroken by this loss and remain committed to supporting our students, staff, and families in every way we can,” Perry and Taverna wrote. “Please keep the family and the entire Doherty Middle School community in your thoughts.”
