American Airlines has announced that it will resume service to Haiti beginning November 1, 2026, becoming the first major U.S. airline to restore flights to the country since operations were suspended in late 2024 due to ongoing security concerns.
The airline will initially offer service to Cap-Haïtien, Haiti’s second-largest city and a key gateway to the country’s northern region. The move is expected to provide an important travel option for Haitians, Haitian Americans, and visitors seeking to reconnect with family, conduct business, or explore Haiti’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
The announcement comes as Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) restrictions on flights to Port-au-Prince remain in place. However, flights to several regional airports, including Cap-Haïtien International Airport, are currently permitted, allowing airlines to gradually restore service while prioritizing passenger safety.
For many members of the Haitian diaspora, particularly those living in South Florida, New York, and other communities across the United States, the return of American Airlines represents more than the restoration of an air route. It symbolizes a renewed connection between Haiti and its global community, offering families greater access to loved ones and creating opportunities to support local economies through tourism, investment, and commerce.
Cap-Haïtien serves as an important cultural and economic hub in northern Haiti and is home to several of the country’s most significant attractions, including the historic Citadelle Laferrière and Sans-Souci Palace, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
While challenges remain, the return of a major U.S. carrier signals growing confidence in regional travel accessibility and provides hope for increased connectivity in the months ahead.
As travel options to Haiti continue to evolve, many in the diaspora are watching closely to see how the reopening of routes may impact travel, family reunification, and economic opportunities.
