Alia Bhatt’s emerald Banarasi brocade set came with prowling tigers and regal birds

At Anshula Kapoor and Rohan Thakkar’s wedding reception in Mumbai, Alia Bhatt wore an Anita Dongre Banarasi set, joining several guests—including the bride—in choosing brocade for the evening.

In deep emerald green, the skirt set brings together a traditional Banarasi weave with a modern silhouette. Bhatt’s look comprised a structured brocade bralette paired with a high-waisted skirt that skimmed the hips before flaring into a fluid, floor-grazing shape. Woven in golden silk threads by artisans in Varanasi, the brocade features regal birds, prowling tigers and botanical elements, while the proportions give the set an almost gown-like quality without losing its connection to Indian occasion wear.

“For me, this look is about honouring heritage while allowing it to evolve,” says Dongre. “Every Banarasi weave we create is developed collaboratively with the master weavers. Together, we create new motifs and signature fabrics that are rooted in tradition yet feel distinctly contemporary.”

The Alpha actor’s ensemble comes from Dongre’s Rewild 2026 collection, which looks to the natural world and India’s weaving traditions. “It reflects the belief that tradition doesn’t stand still,” Dongre says. “It grows, adapts and continues to speak to each new generation.”

Priyanka Kapadia Badani took the less-is-more approach when it came to styling the set, adding a pair of statement earrings from Jagdish Jewellers Chandigarh. “Alia Bhatt’s chandelier earrings are inspired by the passa design. Handcrafted with uncut diamonds, fine pearls, emeralds and rubies, highlighted with firoza beads, these earrings beautifully bring together tradition and modern grace,” reveals Susham Singla, director, Jagdish Jewellers Chandigarh. Makeup Artist Puneet B Saini and hairstylist Priyanka Borkar kept the beauty look in the minimalist territory with kohl-lined eyes, nude pink lips and soft beach waves.

Banarasi brocade may be a wedding staple, but here it comes in a corset top and full skirt. The set also works beyond the wedding circuit–lose the dupatta, swap the chandelier earrings for diamond shoulder-dusters and it becomes an alternative to the black gown at a black-tie cocktail.
