An Air India pilot died in Bali on Wednesday after suffering a heart attack while on scheduled rest, the airline confirmed on Wednesday.
The first officer, who was around 40 years old, had flown from Delhi to Bali a day earlier and was staying at a hotel during the mandated crew layover.
According to an Air India spokesperson, the officer complained of severe discomfort at the hotel and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors diagnosed a heart attack, but he could not be revived despite medical intervention.
“He was immediately taken to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with having suffered a heart attack. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he could not be saved,” news agency PTI quoted the spokesperson as saying.
The airline said it was “deeply saddened” by the loss of its cockpit crew member and extended condolences.
An airline official added that the pilot had undergone all required medical checks in recent months and had no known pre-existing health conditions. He was also operating within the flying-hour limits set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
