Adelaide weather forecast for Wednesday May 20 and the days ahead

Adelaide is heading into a cool, mostly settled stretch of weather, with a few showers early today, calm conditions to end the working week, and a slightly wetter change returning by Sunday.

For the rest of Wednesday, Adelaide can expect a partly cloudy day with a high chance of showers through the morning before conditions ease later in the day. The city is forecast to reach 20 degrees, with westerly winds shifting southwesterly before becoming light by late afternoon. Across the metro, tops will sit around 18 degrees in Mount Barker and 19 to 20 degrees elsewhere.

On Thursday, you can expect partly cloudy skies, a slight chance of morning fog, and light winds keeping things fairly still around the city. After a chilly start of 10 degrees, Adelaide is expected to climb to 20 degrees again. Friday follows a similar pattern, with another partly cloudy day, light winds, and temperatures holding steady between 11 and 20 degrees.

By Saturday, there’s still plenty of dry weather around for most of the day, though the chance of a shower starts to creep back in by evening as a front approaches from the west. Adelaide is forecast to reach 20 degrees after a milder morning low of 13, with north to northwesterly winds developing through the morning before easing later on.

Sunday brings the most noticeable shift in the seven-day outlook. Cloud will increase and showers become more likely, with a top of 18 degrees and southwesterly winds freshening through the morning. Monday stays cool, with another possible shower or two and a maximum of 18 degrees, while southeasterly winds pick up during the day. By Tuesday, Adelaide should see partly cloudy skies and just a slight chance of a lingering shower, with temperatures holding at 18 degrees after a cooler overnight low of 9.

Across South Australia, the broader picture is being shaped by a high pressure system that will keep much of the state fairly stable through Friday before a cold front moves across the Bight on Saturday. That means morning fog patches are likely in parts of the agricultural areas over the next two days, while much of regional SA stays mostly dry. Isolated showers are possible today in agricultural districts, then again in western parts on Friday before extending further into central and eastern areas on Saturday.

Temperatures statewide are expected to stay near to below average, so there won’t be much warmth around even where skies stay clear. Rainfall totals through to the end of Saturday are generally modest, with less than 2mm expected in most parts, although southern coasts, ranges and the far northwest could see between 2 and 5mm. The North East Pastoral district is forecast to remain dry, though flood impacts continue in inland river areas despite the lack of fresh rain.

For those on the water, Adelaide’s metropolitan waters will remain relatively calm through Saturday, with seas below 1 metre and light to moderate winds. Conditions look manageable for most of the period, though boaters should still keep an eye on changes heading into the weekend.

A Flood Warning remains current for the Inland Rivers SA, with elevated river levels continuing along the Warburton River at Poothapootha and lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka throughout May.

Along the Warburton River, river levels remain elevated at Poothapootha Waterhole, with upstream floodwaters expected to keep levels higher than usual through the rest of the month.

On lower Cooper Creek, levels also remain elevated at Cullyamurra Waterhole. The creek is currently around two metres above the Innamincka causeway and steady, with elevated levels expected to continue through May as upstream floodwaters move through the system.
