Adelaide weather forecast for Sunday August 23rd and the days ahead

Adelaide is set for a grey and wet start to the week, with rain arriving on Monday before showers linger into Tuesday and brighter conditions gradually return later in the week.

Sunday is the calmest day in the seven-day outlook, with partly cloudy skies across Adelaide and just a slight chance of morning fog. Temperatures are expected to reach 19 degrees in the city, with light winds becoming northerly through the morning before easing again. It’s a fairly gentle end to the weekend, but it also marks the lead-up to a much more unsettled start to the working week.

By Monday, the change becomes much more noticeable. Cloud will thicken across Adelaide, and rain is expected to move in from the late morning, bringing a very high chance of a proper wet day for the metro area. The city is forecast to reach just 17 degrees after an overnight low of 11, with between 7 and 20mm of rain possible. Northeasterly winds will pick up during the morning, adding to the chilly feel. For commuters, event-goers and anyone heading outdoors, Monday looks like the day to keep the umbrella close.

Tuesday stays cool and damp, although conditions should begin to improve later in the day. Showers are very likely, especially through the morning, before easing as the weather system moves away to the east. Adelaide is again heading for a top of 17 degrees, following a minimum of 12, with possible rainfall of 2 to 10mm. Winds will swing around from east to northeasterly to a fresher south to southwesterly flow during the morning, which may make it feel brisk around the coast and through exposed suburbs.

By Wednesday, Adelaide starts to settle down. The forecast is for partly cloudy conditions with only a slight chance of a shower and light winds. It will still be cool, with a minimum of 8 and a top of 17 degrees, but the heavier rain should be behind us by then.

The second half of the week looks much more inviting. Thursday is shaping up as the pick of the stretch, with sunny skies, light winds early and a top of 19 degrees after a cold start of 8. Friday brings a little more cloud back into the picture, along with a medium chance of showers and a top of 20 degrees. Winds will turn from north to northeasterly before shifting west to northwesterly during the day. Saturday stays partly cloudy, with another medium chance of a shower and a top of 19 degrees, while light winds become south to southwesterly in the morning. It’s not a washout by any means, but the week does look split between a wet early burst and a more manageable, milder finish.

Across South Australia, the broader picture is more active, especially through the first half of the week. Early fog is affecting parts of the agricultural area on Sunday, mainly on and east of the ranges, while showers and possible thunderstorms develop in the northwest and extend across the west through the day, tending to rain in western districts. On Monday, that wet weather spreads statewide, with showers extending across SA and rain developing in parts of the pastoral districts, the West Coast and Eyre Peninsula, possibly reaching central districts by the evening. Thunderstorms are also possible about the pastoral districts, extending into northern Eyre Peninsula and the Flinders district. Rainfall totals to the end of Wednesday are expected to be broadly light to moderate, but parts of the West Coast, Eyre Peninsula and central agricultural areas could see 15 to 30mm, with isolated local falls of 30 to 60mm also possible, particularly with thunderstorms. By Tuesday and Wednesday, showers contract eastwards and conditions begin to ease, although the agricultural area may still see isolated showers and below-average maximum temperatures.
