Adelaide is set for a fairly pleasant run of autumn weather, with a brief chance of showers and even a rumble of thunder on Sunday before sunnier, warmer conditions build through the week.
Today is shaping up as the pick for anyone heading out early across Adelaide, with clear skies and a top of 25 degrees expected in the city. Easterly winds will turn northeasterly through the morning, but overall it will stay settled and dry. Around the suburbs, highs will sit close to the mid-20s, including 24 degrees at Glenelg and Noarlunga, 25 at Elizabeth and 23 at Mount Barker.
Sunday brings the week’s main change, with cloud increasing and a medium chance of showers in the morning. There is also the chance of a thunderstorm early in the day, so it is one of those mornings worth keeping an eye on if you are heading out. Adelaide’s temperature is still forecast to reach 25 degrees after a mild overnight low of 16, with north to northeasterly winds turning west to northwesterly before easing later on. Rainfall totals are expected to stay light, with 0 to 1 mm forecast for the city.
By Monday, conditions settle down again. Adelaide can expect a partly cloudy day with a cooler start of 13 degrees and a top of 23. Winds will remain light for much of the day before shifting southeast to southwesterly in the afternoon, then east to southeasterly in the evening. It looks like a calmer day overall, with only a very slight chance of rain.
Tuesday continues the improvement, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures lifting to 27 degrees after another cool morning of 13. Northeasterly winds will freshen during the day, helping bring back a warmer feel across the metro area.
The second half of the week stays comfortably dry. Wednesday is forecast to be partly cloudy with a minimum of 18 and a top of 25, while Thursday turns sunny again with 26 degrees expected in the city. By Friday, Adelaide looks set to finish the working week on a warmer note, with mostly sunny conditions and a top of 28 degrees. After Sunday’s brief interruption, it is a run of classic autumn weather that should suit everything from coastal walks to outdoor lunches.
Across South Australia, the broader picture is a little more mixed. Early this morning, frost is possible in the southeast and fog patches may develop over parts of the southern agricultural area. Later today, isolated showers and possible thunderstorms are forecast to extend over the West Coast district, with the chance of that activity reaching Eyre Peninsula and Kangaroo Island towards midnight. The north will remain dry.
On Sunday, those showers and possible thunderstorms are expected to move across the agricultural area in the morning, with isolated showers lingering around southern coasts into the afternoon. The north and west should stay dry. Into Monday and Tuesday, most of the state returns to drier conditions, apart from isolated early morning showers about southern coasts on Monday and some patchy morning fog in the south on Tuesday. Rainfall totals through to the end of Tuesday are expected to remain modest for most districts, although southern coasts and ranges could see 2 to 5 mm, increasing to around 10 mm in the Lower South East.
For boaters in Adelaide Metropolitan Waters, conditions are relatively gentle through the next few days, with seas below 1 metre and low swell. Sunday morning is the one period to watch, with a 50 per cent chance of showers and the chance of a thunderstorm.
Flooding is continuing across parts of South Australia’s inland river systems, with elevated river levels along the Warburton River at Poothapootha and elevated creek levels along lower Cooper Creek near Innamincka. Many roads and access tracks remain impacted, especially river and creek crossings, with transport and movement for local communities and travellers likely to face further disruption. Anyone heading into the region is being urged to check road conditions before travelling.
Along the Warburton River at Poothapootha Waterhole, river levels remain elevated, with further rises expected in the coming weeks as upstream floodwaters continue moving through.
At lower Cooper Creek near Cullyamurra Waterhole, creek levels are also elevated and sitting at around 0.80 metres above the Innamincka causeway. Conditions are currently steady, but further rises are expected over the coming weeks as more upstream floodwater arrives.
