Image mocked up to illustrate the concept
As debate continues around the controversial “Too Pretty to Do Maths” slogan which was emblazoned across a t-shirt sold in a local clothing chain, one Adelaide school is cutting through the noise with a confident, future-focused message: Too H.O.T. Not To.
At St Raphael’s School in Parkside, the narrative is being rewritten from the ground up. Rather than entertaining outdated ideas about who is “good” at maths, the school is championing the belief that every child can succeed—with the right support, mindset, and opportunities to grow.
The H.O.T. in the campaign stands for Higher Order Thinking, a set of skills that goes far beyond numbers on a page. It’s about problem-solving, connecting ideas, and applying knowledge in new and meaningful ways—skills that are increasingly essential in a fast-changing world.
At the core of the school’s approach is numeracy fluency, which strengthens working memory and builds the foundation for deeper thinking. Instead of treating maths as an innate talent, St Raphael’s focuses on practice, persistence, and engagement—key ingredients in building both confidence and capability.
And it’s not just theory. The school recently brought its philosophy to life through the 2026 Maths Movement Amazing Maths Race, drawing more than 90 participants from the local community. With six hands-on activity stations, the event transformed maths into an evening of energy, curiosity, and fun.
The biggest takeaway? Kids actually enjoyed it. And that enjoyment matters. When learning feels positive and achievable, confidence builds quickly—and confidence is often the tipping point for long-term success in maths.
Beyond the classroom, the initiative extends into homes and the wider community. Families are being equipped with a free guide to support confident maths learning at home, while younger children are being engaged through outreach programs at kindergartens and playgroups. Storytelling, music, and hands-on activities are all part of making maths accessible from the earliest years.
The message is clear. Maths is for everyone. Whether it’s budgeting, building, cooking, or everyday decision-making, mathematical thinking plays a role in daily life and future careers. By making maths visible, relevant, and enjoyable, St Raphael’s is working to ensure that no child feels excluded from the subject.
In a media landscape still shaped by limiting stereotypes, this local school is offering a refreshing reset. Not “too pretty to do maths,” but Too H.O.T. Not To—because confidence, curiosity, and capability are things every child deserves to develop.
