The Abu Dhabi Marathon has been awarded Gold Label Road Race status by World Athletics, marking a new stage in the event’s growth since its launch in 2018.
The race is organised by Abu Dhabi Sports Council and sponsored by ADNOC.
“The Abu Dhabi Marathon receiving the Gold Label Road Race classification represents a new achievement that reflects the event’s success in implementing the highest international organisational standards.”
World Athletics grants the label to road races that meet strict standards across organisation, safety, technical delivery, runner services and international participation.
The recognition places the Abu Dhabi Marathon closer to the top tier of global road running events.
The race has grown steadily since its first edition. More than 10,000 runners took part in 2018, before the total rose to more than 16,000 in 2019.
The 2021 edition, held after a pandemic postponement, attracted around 12,000 runners under precautionary measures.
Participation climbed again after that. More than 20,000 runners took part in 2022, followed by around 25,000 in 2023.
The 2024 race drew more than 33,000 runners from over 150 nationalities, while the latest edition recorded more than 37,000 participants.
The event includes the full marathon over 42.2km, a half marathon and shorter races aimed at wider community participation.
H.E. Aref Hamad Al Awani, secretary-general of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said the award showed the event’s growing standing. He said:
“The Abu Dhabi Marathon receiving the Gold Label Road Race classification represents a new achievement that reflects the event’s success in implementing the highest international organisational standards.”
“It also confirms the growing status the race now enjoys on the global road running calendar, in addition to its role in encouraging community members to practice sports, promote healthy lifestyles, and enhance the quality of life for all members of society.”
